The Days Will Go By Slow, But The Years Go By Fast

This weekend I was the keynote speaker for the Peterson Spouses Club scholarship reception. It was so much fun to see excited new freshman heading off to college (so young and unsuspecting ;) ) just kidding, well kind of. As most people run from public speaking I actually really enjoy it. I guess there is just something exciting about being able to have a room full of people listening to your thoughts and ideas. I guess I have come a long way since my humble start in public speaking in the 4th grade as the MC of the Santa Clara Elementary school talent show. I didn't try out for the MC job because I liked public speaking, but as my sister had secured 2 minutes of the show with her dance routine, it was my big sister one up option by securing the entire show. Nothing like a little sibling rivalry. A talent of mine that was the demise of most of my childhood recesses (talking in class never a good thing) is now something that is appreciated by others. After I was done with my speech one of the parents came up to me and gave me a hug and said my words were just what her daughter needed to hear. In the program they had a little bio about me (side note I sounded way more cool than I actually am) but my bio did say I have a 8 month old daughter. The lady told me to always remember that as a parent the days go by slow, but the years go by fast. I think these words are so true to any mom or dad. Any new mom that tells you there hasn't been days that the only thing that kept them going was bed/nap time they would be lying to you. As Isla turned 8 months yesterday I can't even believe where the last 8 months have gone. I think pregnancy tries to teach you the lesson of the days going by slow, but the big pictures goes fast, but just like all the other things people will tell you about motherhood, until you experience it on your own you won't listen to it. I have been a firm believer of not setting expectations for myself when it comes to parenthood because sometimes the best plans are the ones you let make themselves, but I do plan on following that ladies advice and never forget how fast the years will go. As a parent you never get a do-over or a chance to go back and do things again, so my only expectation will be to always take ever chance I can to remember how fast the years will go and enjoy every minute even during the long days. :)

  2. Emily, I have a version of this quote on a post-it on my dresser mirror...it's what keeps me going some days. You'll remember these words over and over through the coming months and years!
