So winter is here or at least in Colorado it is. Winter is the time where we would hope that crime would go down, but as the holiday's approach for whatever theory you want to believe crime goes up. Some people believe that the drive for commercialization drives people to seek out money in ways other than earning it, some believe it is a way for people to deal with bad childhood memories of the holiday's, but whatever the reason tis' the season of crime.
Now this isn't a chain letter, forwarded email, or New Channel 5's top ways to reduce crime it is just me giving my friends my thoughts on what they can do to help reduce their likelihood of becoming a victim this holiday season. Now first, crime is everywhere and as much as we would like to run from it unless you are willing to pack up and move woods and live alone you can't out run it. So here you go:
1) You live in your car. Now I try to keep my car cleaned out for the most part, but it is amazing how fast your life could be fully dismantled by someone only breaking into your car. Example: You are out to dinner someone watches you go in they break into your car faster than you can open it with a key only to grab your garage door remote and your registration that has your address on it and your GPS unit only to get to your home before you can even say dessert please. Rule #1: keep garage door remotes hidden or out of your car completely.
2) Co-Irkers..... many of us live in cube land these days at work. You may think of your cube mate as your BFF, but you never know when they may have their son, daughter, random customer meet them at their desk for a moment only for them to glance over to your cube to see a big sticky that says "Password is Password" and before you know it your log-in is walking out the door.
3) "I was just warming up my car!" Yes, we all like a warm car, but remember it is no secret that most people go to work between 7-8am and will warm up their car during those hours. Your car auto locked and all could be gone before you even know it. Car theft doesn't exactly make the 5:00 news so a lot of time it is much more common that people know.
4) Facebook= Root of All Evil Ok not at all, but if you have kids it isn't just the adult internet perv's lurking from a sketchy basement you should be worried about it is actually their friends you should be worried about. I read the other day the average teen has anywhere from 300-600 friends on facebook. So everytime your child post a status update about leaving out of town or getting a new computer etc their 600 closest or people they met once at Starbucks know exactly what they are doing.
So these are just a few tips to keep people aware during the holiday season. I will post more here and there, and help everyone out or maybe a selfish ploy to reduce my own work load ;)
Happy Holiday's on that note and the countdown to Christmas is on!
